We concentrate on improving your communication skills and you will practise these skills in real-life situations such as telephoning a restaurant to make a reservation, writing a letter of complaint and completing an online shopping transaction.

You will be placed on an English course which is suitable for your level.

Assessment of Course

Edexcel Functional Skills assessments are offered at Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3. The assessments consist of three parts: Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening.

Course Overview

The course is planned around a series of topics such as Sports and Leisure, Where We Live and Shopping. We concentrate on improving your communication skills and you will practise these skills in real-life situations such as telephoning a restaurant to make a reservation, writing a letter of complaint and completing an online shopping transaction. We will focus on improving your spelling, grammar and punctuation skills. You will have a set of words to learn each week for a spelling quiz. You will be encouraged to join the Reading Club and read and talk about books you enjoy.

Career Progression

If you achieve your Entry Level 3 qualification, you will be able to move on to the Functional Skills Level 1 course. An Entry Level 3 qualification in English is a requirement for most Level 1 vocational courses at Gateway College. Your qualification will be recognised by employers and other colleges when you are applying for work or study.
