Gateway Sixth Form College has partnered with Coventry University to upskill key teaching staff to hone their clinical practices in readiness for a new T-Level Health programme launched in September 2022.
The flagship T Level Health course has enabled teachers from the grade 2 city college to participate in a bespoke four-day training programme developed alongside the Clinical Skills team at Coventry University. The initiative has been led by Gateway Colleges Curriculum Leader for Health and Social Care and T-Level Health Lead Amy Mark. Amy stated,
“We are proud to be the first Sixth Form College in the city to be offering T Levels and have been fortunate in gaining funding from the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) to prepare our teachers to deliver the industry led course. The department thoroughly enjoyed this training, particularly the opportunity to have meaningful discussions with professionals with recent industry experience.”
During the training staff had the opportunity to learn and practise clinical skills for adult nursing. This included: taking physiological measurements; moving and handling; and pressure and wound care. T Level Health teachers are expected to teach and assess these clinical skills on the course, so this was an excellent practical CPD opportunity, allowing them to begin planning contextualised learning scenarios.
To support the delivery of the T Levels, Gateway College has been successful in gaining significant capital funding from the government to construct a brand-new Health Suite equipped with state-of-the-art technology and specialist industry standard equipment. Staff from the College have been liaising with the Head Technician at the university when ordering equipment and designing the layout for this.
In addition to this, T Level Health students will shadow undergraduate nursing students during their clinical skills sessions, which will count towards their industry placement hours.
This collaboration between Gateway College and Coventry University has been one of the many outstanding outcomes of the Better Futures Multi Academy Trust (BFMAT) which was formed in 2019. Gateway College is one of the three founding members alongside Coventry University, building upon the College’s vision and values and continuing on their journey of improvement, aspiration and high achievement. Within the BFMAT, Gateway has retained its identity as a leading city Sixth Form College, delivering high quality teaching and learning and progression opportunities for local young people, whilst working with like-minded partners to develop innovative opportunities.
