Annual Remembrance Day service at Gateway College

“Tell them of us, and say for your tomorrow, we gave our today.”

Gateway Sixth Form College were proud to welcome Mr Robin Jenkins from the At Risk Memorials Project, and Mrs Diana Brooks MBE and Deputy Lieutenant for Leicester and Leicestershire, representing the Lord-Lieutenant and His Majesty The King to the annual Act of Remembrance held on 11th November 2024.

As students performed readings of poetry and verse to an attentive audience of almost 1000 staff and students, the VIP Guests laid wreaths to commemorate those who have, and continue to, sacrifice their lives in conflicts throughout the world to secure our liberty and safety.  This includes former Gateway College students who lost their lives in the second World War and are commemorated with a war memorial at Newarke House Museum in the city centre.

The service closed with a single bugle reciting the ‘Last Post’, followed by a haunting two-minute silence, and a rendition of ‘Reveille’ as poppy petals made from silk and delicate papers floated down over the crowd from the balcony above.

“When you go home, tell them of us and say for your tomorrow, we gave our today.”
