Are you taking your first steps into further education?

Gateway College offers a wide range of vocational and academic qualification from Entry Level 1 to Advanced Level 3 to ensure you achieve your goals.

We believe that all students deserve to have a personalised learning experience that challenges, inspires and motivates, underpinned by high quality teaching and support.

The Basketball Academy has a history of success at both a regional and national level. Students are not recruited solely on their playing ability or experience, a desire to learn, improve and practise hard is essential.

You will study 3 mandatory unit and 4 optional specialist units.

Mandatory Units

• Access to high quality training and fitness facilities
• Weekly fitness and conditioning sessions
• Access to experienced physiotherapy and rehab
• Advice on a wellness and nutrition programme
• Academic study on our wide range of courses
• 7 hours per week timetabled during the College day and a further 7 hours play in your own time
• Play in local and national competitions and tournaments
• The opportunity to play at National League level

Your progression is a focus for us as much as it is for you.

It is about improvements from week to week and term to term in all aspects of your learning, development and basketball choices. We are also interested in your achievements when you leave Gateway College and offer basketball pathways from local leagues to senior basketball and overseas links.

Academy Director, Karl Brown has a glowing history as a player and a coach. He was the first Englishman to play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Final Fours in the USA and has represented Great Britain. He brings his wealth of knowledge and experience to the Academy having coached the England u18 Men’s National Team for 7 years and founding the Leicester Warriors.


Led by Leicester Warriors’ Karl Brown, Gateway Basketball Academy has a History of success at both a national and regional level.

As recently as 2016, the Men’s 1st Team finished 3rd in the Academy Basketball League (North) whilst the Men’s 2nd team topped the Association of College’s East Midlands League with the Women coming 3rd.


The programme incorporates a mixture of individual learning and improvement alongside various aspects of offensive and defensive team play. All players are involved in a comprehensive programme of fixtures and, whilst it is not obligatory, an exit route to the National League is offered through the Leicester Warriors Basketball Club:

We pride ourselves on taking players to the next level during their time with us. Not every player in the programme will play professionally or become a National League level player, but all have improved and become better players at a competitive, recreational level whilst enjoying their education.


Recent successes from the Gateway Basketball Academy include Raphell Thomas-Edwards, Elliott Sentance, Kareem Queeley and Pak Chingombe.

Raphell runs his own coaching company after graduating from University of Buffalo in New York and playing NCAA 1 basketball in the USA. He featured in England National Teams as an U16, U18 and U20.

Elliot is having another successful season for the Lethbridge Pronghorns in Canada and featured in England National Teams as an U16, U18 and U20.

Kareem has cemented his status as one of the top junior players in Europe after selection to the Jordan Brand Classic International game in 2017 and plays with Real Madrid having begun his career with the Leicester Warriors. He has already featured for England as an U16 at the age of 14.

Pak has stayed in Leicestershire is pursuing a degree in Sport Science, Sports Development and Management at Loughborough University and continues to play basketball in the NBL Division One Men’s Play Off Final.


Our network of contacts across Europe and in North America enable us to provide opportunities for progression. Players from the Gateway Basketball Academy have gone on to have bright futures and good overseas education in Europe, the NCAA and Junior College in the USA as well as closer to home going onto university and playing with the Leicester Warriors in NBL Division One, offering senior men’s basketball.

There is a full pathway at U18’s to compliment your time at Gateway College. The Basketball Academy can also be enjoyed as an enrichment for both boys and girls.
