You will need a qualification at Entry 3 in Functional Skills English or ESOL.
You will take the Edexcel Functional Skills English assessment at Level 1during the year. This qualification has three parts. In the Reading exam you will read two texts and answer questions about language, layout and purpose. In the Writing exam you will produce two pieces of writing, for example; a letter, an email, an article. There are two Speaking and Listening assessments: a formal group discussion and an informal group discussion.
This course is about developing your language, literacy and learning skills. It is based around topics and activities designed to help you improve your reading and understanding, spelling, punctuation and grammar. You will become more confident in communicating with others in a range of everyday situations. You will be encouraged to read a book every week which will help you to improve your vocabulary and general knowledge. The Level 1 qualification in English is a requirement for most Level 2 vocational courses at Gateway College. If you achieve your Level 1English qualification, you will be able to move on to the English Pre-GCSE (Level 2) course.
This qualification will be recognised by employers and other colleges when you are applying for work or study.
