This highly creative course aims to give you the confidence and skills to explore a diverse range of skills and techniques related to Fashion & Textiles. You will research new fashion trends, and study the work of contemporary fashion and textile designers. You will be introduced to a range of textile and fashion techniques including the use of the sewing machine for surface embellishment and garment construction. You are encouraged to explore and experiment through a wide range of textiles / fashion media. It should be noted that this is an Art based qualification. Individual research and development of ideas are documented through mood boards, sketchbooks and presentation boards. We encourage you to develop a questioning and analytical attitude. You will create your individually designed garments through the process of research and development of ideas, textile techniques, fashion illustration and design for final outcomes. Gateway College holds an exciting annual Fashion Show and you will create garments for this as part of the course.
The Art and Design Programme Area has an excellent reputation for their courses. Many students progress onto the highly successful BTEC Pre-Degree Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Gateway, through to a variety of high profile BA (Hons) Degree courses. This course will be valuable for students wishing to pursue a career related to Fashion and Textiles.
There are a range of extension opportunities for students studying all courses in Art and Design. Previous study visits have included London Galleries, Craft Galleries, Clothes Show Live, Nottingham Trent University Fashion Show and Alexander McQueen ‘Savage Beauty’. We also benefit from a programme of visiting speakers and professional workshops carried out by professionals who work in the Art and Design Industry. Each year students participate in creating for the Gateway Fashion Show (December) and display individual Art and Design work in the Summer End of Year Exhibition (June).
