Gateway College

Letter to Parents

Dear Parent/Guardian

New punctuality policy at Gateway

Some of you may be aware that we have been piloting a new punctuality policy at Gateway since January 2013. It was a response to the growing number of interruptions caused to the starts of lessons by a minority of students who repeatedly arrive late to their classes with no good reason.

The pilot has been successful in gaining teaching time and reducing students’ lateness. Therefore we have decided that from the 4th March 2013, we will be putting a new set of rules for punctuality in place for all students at Gateway College.

The rule is very simple.

• If a student is more than 5 minutes late to class without making a prior arrangement they will not be able to join the lesson.

• The student will be marked absent, but should see the teacher afterwards to collect work so that you can catch up.

Students who are going to be late for unavoidable reasons will be able to discuss this in advance with their teacher and make a special arrangement. This will be the only exception to the rule and should only happen on rare occasions. The student will have agreed their later time of arrival. They will be allowed to join the class up to five minutes after their agreed time but will be marked late on the register.

We understand that you may have some concerns about the effect of this policy on your daughter or son. There is more detailed information, including responses to frequently asked questions on the College website.

The intention of this policy is to improve the quality of learning and teaching for every student at Gateway College. I hope that we can count on your continued support with this aim.

Yours faithfully

Suzanne Overton-Edwards
